The Shining City (Free verse) by ErgoErgun
One teaspoon apathy, two cups hope, and a gallon arrogance: These are the degenerate ingredients that form a modern American melting pot: Over two hundred years of brewing freedom twisted into rich wine, but still a pathetic, plain copy of the Champaign it once was. Maybe the nuances that separate modern America from the Jeffersonian pragmatism of old are trivial, Or maybe that's just the wine talking... Either way, the hope, the freedom, though diminished live on in a new collective who've forgotten the reasons why they hope or dare to be free. .. People who reach for a glaze of the original American dream, cling wine glasses in thin air, and talk of intellectualism drunkenly. Our reach has shortened over the decades, and the dream's gone with the wine, but we still binge on the idea that hope, freedom, they sound good... Why? - Like a drunk we don't know... We just take our focus off the future and say we do.
