Reflection Upon Looking in Roget's Thesaurus, Copyright 1941 (Free verse) by Syr Charles
Curious, he turns to section 897 In hopes that Language will enlighten him. Upon arriving, he finds fewer antonyms for "Love" than synonyms. The antonyms, however, show a truth: Hate is the opposite of Love. It is a simple idea, one that he has known all his life; He was born with it, like knowing how to breathe. It requires an explanation in principle but not in practice, Similar to the love for which he seeks an answer. It exists without Language Knowing this truth, he understands much now. He sees why he hates himself for a decision made in the Present Based on a situation in the Past Which may not even arise in the Future. (Past, Present, Future: all antonyms of a sort.) But that decision has been made And ha can no more change it Then he could stop breathing. It is a part of him And he is a part of it. ?None of this matters,? he tells himself, Because he knows that what he wants and feels Can never fully come true. For though he wants in the Future what he had in the Past, She is happy (section 827) with the Present. Curious, he looks again at the antonyms of Love; He reflects on the Past, Present, and Future, Fully aware of his self-knowledge, And he finds that unsurprisingly, Language lies. ?Friendship? is not an antonym of ?Love.?
