conflagration (Free verse) by Freethinker1602
You and me, we have a home
We made it from two boxes
We aren't hobos or bums
but built with what we had
they are side by side
connected by paste
it looks like something
that belongs on a fridge
these two simple boxes
joined together make a
home with which we are ecstatic
our smiles are shown by a kerosene lantern
its gentle glow luminescent
things are sound, stable and good
we planned our lives forever
but life does not go according to plan
a changing of wind
the kerosene lantern fell to the floor
the flames spread
consuming our boxes
the flames licked at the walls
the roof collapsed
we were trapped in a conflagration
you were quarantined from me
we were separated by our box
I fought tooth and nail to get to you
you fought blood sweat and tears to reach me
we panicked, struggled and sacrificed
to redeem each other
but it was too late for rescue
we fought so hard
our box gave i n
we got to each other
this is what we needed
we knew we could not escape
the inferno closing in, consuming
the choking, acrid smoke
I took your hand in mine
I held it at our hearts
you pulled me closer into your arms
our tears washed streaks of soot from our face
we knew this moment would be our last
we wept harder
it is too soon to say goodbye
but these events transpire, inexorable
you hold me close in your arms
I allow myself to be vulnerable
we connect hear to hear
soul to soul
the end draws near
we take our last kiss
our last embrace
we don't need to speak to say our goodbyes
we hold on tight
this is the only way to spend
our last moment
we don't want it to be, but it has to be
here we go, our bodies burning
still we are together
we take our last breath together
we die in each others arms together
now our souls detach, we fly away
we spent our last moments together
we died together
it was the right way
the way it should have been
