On Our Watch (Free verse) by hobojo
On our watch People have died Why don't we care Just because they are not Americans Are we to watch Should we step in What is our role Society in America Cares about the next big purchase Crate and Barrel Ikea Depends on your wealth Community College or Harvard Or somewhere in between No time to stop And think about others When we have to decide What insurance to choose And what type of carpet Laminant floors Granite or Corian While people starve Sit in pain No access to education Science or Medication While people are forced To follow a ruler To do as they're told But we in America We fall in the mold We have freedom But we only conform We could change so much If only we cared About more than our possessions So on our watch People starve While we eat the rest Of the portion we are served And if they forget to take off the tomatoes We send it back To the landfill it goes
