A Patch of Time (Free verse) by Skamper
the smell of strawberries
touched by the breeze
shall always bring a smile
I laugh now - and even then
I see you all
staggered within rows
of sun-warmed plants
bent in search of fruit
hidden in the greenery
one of you -
will straighten Meerkat-like
stretch necks and backs
twist from side to side
survey the surrounds
satisfied all is well
bend again to the work at hand
safe in the knowledge
another will soon rise to take your place
someone giggles -
a slightly over-ripe berry
tossed from the latest one to rise
lands upon the naked back
of one whos' time as lookout
has passed â
The Great Strawberry War of 2007
continuesâ¦
my laugh catches
somewhere between thoughts
my toes curl slightly
reminding me how good
it feels working barefoot
I wear a small smile
warm and sad
just like your hug
when we said goodbye
