It Could Be Worse (Free verse) by smiffy84
The flames burn my hand Maybe I should pull it away But the fire is warm And outside is so dark So I’ll stay With burning hands Because it could be worse My feet are cold The fire went out long ago Now it’s as cold as outside I could start it again But I’d have to make myself known So I’ll just sit in the cold Because it could be worse It’s dark now My eyes strain to see My breath comes out in clouds The fire would help But it would show them where I am So I’ll sit, cold in the dark Because it could be worse The walls are closing in And the hole is getting bigger They’ll see me soon I could move out of the way But they might hear me So I’ll stay where I am Because it could be worse Outside is even darker And they’re coming The hole is too big now I’ll have to move or I’ll be seen But there’s nowhere to go But I don’t worry too much Because it could be worse The walls have gone I’m alone in the darkness I’m easy prey I could run but they’d catch me If I don’t move they may not notice So I’ll stay still Because it could be worse I heard a noise At least I think I did They came looking for me Maybe I should run, find a hiding place But maybe they won’t come back I’m happy here, not knowing Because it could be worse They came back They’ll see me They see my fear I could scream But no one will come And it’s pointless running now Because it can’t get any worse It got worse They’ve found me They hear what I’m thinking I can hear them coming, hear them running Something just touched me There’s nothing I can do now Because it keeps getting worse
