Feed The War Machine (Free verse) by smiffy84
Soldier on I stand alone The killing fields Become my home I’m left to die A broken man I soldier on Alone, I stand My cold, dead eyes, My tears inside By day I fight At night I cry Too soon to die But cannot hide The tears that lie In cold, dead eyes Body strong But broken mind Who knows what screams He hears inside? Shell-Shock victim Join the rest The tortured souls Who wait for death Take this man With nothing left And send him home In body bag He fought the fight He fought it well But could not fight His own dark hell The spoils of war The price we pay The men who die The men they save The dead and the broken Are no use They are replaced By new recruits So see the posters Heed the call Your country needs you One and all Come train to kill Come train to fight Come train for war Come train to die Another field Alone I stand My gun, my hope Held in my hand And as I gasp My final breaths I fear no Hell I welcome death And so the line Continues on The bodies mount And still they come Stupid, weak And full of dreams Come on and feed The War machine These men had families Wives and sons And into battle One by one Generals send them To their death They kill their own From behind desks And we, the stupid Go there, still Run into battle To be killed There is no purpose No reasoning We blindly feed The War machine Eighteen years old His life ahead But now no more For he is dead The old, fat general Waddles on Why do young die So old live on? I’m captured, tortured Kept alive To be hurt more I’m dead inside And now I see Just what it means My body feeds The War machine Iain Smith, 18/06/2005
