Kingdom Gone (Free verse) by thepinkbunnyofdoom
The king's men and women have come Peasants with torches and pitchforks I told you that your words would carry us to our graves I didn't expect this riot, as my neighboring rivals Seek to strike me down for the last time Its too late now, I can hear them coming up the stairs Footsteps drown in an ocean of voices All of them tiny but unrelenting I would blow out the candle lights But not yet, I'm saving the special effects They are banging down my door And wax beacon in hand, I stand on this window's edge They ran in gods, trying to still my heartbeat I blew out the candle and one by one they ran at me As suspected, they came to snuff me, as I had my light But lynch mobs were never known for being too bright So I skirted the window ledge, and ran Across the ramparts of this castle Until I had reached my destination The northern tower, where the prior queen had hung herself By the time they had gathered again and I was rediscovered There I stood, the devil at mass Hatred fueled flames as they again marched against my position They didn't see the clever boy who'd stole the crown They saw a murder, hands still dripping blood An army of demons has never marched like this legion Eyes and hearts cold, blood was to be spilled again I screamed a last request, that even these devils couldn't deny Let me dangle from this rope, as once hung the April Queen I slipped the prepared rope around my neck Then proceeded to tied the other end To the corpse of a catapult lying nearby Knife in hand as my feet forgot the caress of stone And gravity had me in her sights A captive, to torture slowly with the loss of oxygen But ropes cut, and the waters of the moat catch me Just as I will probably catch pneumonia From this cold dark and dirty little lake I hear the townsfolk cheer in the castle above me As they see the dark silhouette of a dead suit of armor Hung earlier in this evening So that I might obtain my freedom There is a price for everything
