Reach for the Nightmare (Free verse) by longships
Famine and war, relentless scenes of turmoil,
Nightmare images that haunt me as I sleep.
Children cry out in pain, unable to understand,
Why their world of play, has become a place of death.
And in the darkness of my grief, I can hear the children scream.
Tears fall from eyes unable to behold the scene,
Unable to comprehend the suffering mankind inflicts upon his own.
Civil unrest, revolution. Who is right? Who is wrong?
As life ceases, innocent millions again fall victim.
And in the darkness of my guilt, I can hear the children scream.
Refugees of humanityâs death wish, children without hope,
Maimed and disfigured casualties of greed and hate ravaged lands.
Obscene that a few men can destroy so many in a single breath,
I despair at a situation I can do nothing for but weep.
And in the darkness of my torment, I can hear the children scream.
Have sense and reason all but disappeared?
Will mankind ever learn from his sordid past?
Shall I never again see the children smile?
Will I once more hear their joyous laughter?
For in the light of all insanity,
I still hear the children scream.
