My Friend, the Oak (Free verse) by MistressSnow
Staring out my window
At my king of all the wood
Was a giant among my life
An oak that understood
His arms were open wide for me
And the wind laughed through his hair
This creature of the earth knew my soul
And that is very rare
Since my husband lost his life
So young within the war
My oak gave me peace
Knew no hate within his core
When my husband died, I lost him
In my mind he is not there
I???ve forgotten all about him
And the times that we had shared
I turned from my window
And to the wall my eyes came
And there was my lover
Tucked away in a picture frame
Startled and quite shocked
A vision was bestowed to me
The glass before my lovers face
Danced a memory
There was my late husband
In uniform, oh he looked his best
And standing at his side was me
Dawned in a wedding dress
The happiest day of my life
Was gleaming in the glass
Then tears streamed down my face
I remembered him at last
I sobbed with joy, I cried for love
At this memory of pure art
Despite all lost, at last I???d found
The piece missing from my heart
Then my tears dried with a sigh
And all things came into focus
The vision was not a vision
Nor some mystic hocus pocus
But dancing shadows of a friendly oak
That the sun shined behind
So a lonely girl, who had lost her heart
Would have love again to find
