What Has It Gotten Us? (Free verse) by Dovina
Before we were free We awaited his call We served him, had manners Received his kind gifts Now that we’re free We can call anytime We can ask him to dinner And pick up the check We can say any word Discuss any subject Drive any tractor And change our flat tires And through all the change When evening comes We can put on a dress And stand there all pretty While he opens the door That dress hasn’t changed Only in style It still opens doors Of backstages and limos And Room 324 At the Holiday Inn But the cell phone rings Nakamoto’s flown in Wants to meet right away “Sorry ‘bout that In the old days I’d stay”
