Back Slidin' (Free verse) by Quarton
Cruisin' down the road, the day easy on my mind, quit my lousy job, left that assembly line behind. No worries about tomorrow, what it might portend, tho' I get this crazy feelin' of back slidin' once again. Can't worry about tomorrow, just livin' for today, letting those old chips fall, to lie wherever they may. Hoping the ones I left will be able to understand, I'm just a freedom lovin', travelin kind of man. Gettin' low on gas, there's a station sign ahead, need to fill er up tho' I'm a little short on bread. No friends to rely on, for myself I'll have to fend, still can't shake this feelin' of back slidin' once again. Been drivin' steady, should be in Yuma pretty soon, desert air is cool under a brightly shining moon. feelin' kinda tired, should be in Phoenix by the morn, for some strange reason lonely and just a tad forlorn. Unsure of why I'm down, should be happy as a lark, tho' I keep on thinkin', lifes no walk inside the park. The sun not shining clearer, except inside my mind, I still can't stop this feelin' for those I left behind. That job I quit in anger wasn't really all that bad, and I sure miss sweet Nancy, the love we briefly had. I must admit to something, a revelation if I can, despite my firm avowal, not a travelin' kind of man. So I turned my car around, headed back for home, a lesson to be learned in this grass is greener poem. But maybe I should've kept goin' as again I apprehend, this crazy, crazy feelin' of back slidin' once again.
