Speaking Dog (Free verse) by MacFrantic
I stared at my wolf mix canine
Stared at him long and hard until I was red in the face
He stared back at me too
I chased a car with my dog
Got a quarter-mile before we had to stop
Took half an hour to get home
I asked him what he knew
He replied in a gruff and incomprehensible manner
Never asked him again
Laughed in my dog's face
Showed him that I could use my thumbs many ways
He licked himself for a while
Lost my friend on an expedition
Man said "I aint seen no mutt in these parts"
My neighbors are hicks
Grabbed a stick and hurled it
Nobody here but my shadow, and he won't fetch
Whimpered myself to sleep
