roadkill (Free verse) by Freethinker1602
you were zooming along the highway you had your baby in the back seat your wife in the passenger seat there was a pretty bird that flew beside your car it was a secondary partner you would sing sweet songs to the poor creature beckoning it you amused yourself by making this poor creature join you for your travels the bird would sing to you in joy the bird would bring you wild berries if you were hungry the bird was led along believing it was of value you watched this travel buddy this wretched unintelligent creature you wanted see how far you could make it fly before it grew tired wouldn't you know the creature kept flying it kept following the bird was loyal it believed it had found family had found a flock every now and then you would fuck with the bird maybe take hard turn and watch it tumble the loyal bird kept following it grew weary but kept following kept flying, hope, inspired by a song of man, kept this creature traveling the creature traveled so long it died of exhaustion until the end of its meaningless life, it was faithful the heart of the bird broke when it died it discovered the song that had been sung to it was a lie the loyal, innocent bird had been cheated when it died, and its heart broke it dropped like a stone from mid air and was squished as a semi passed your car the bird which you lied to, enticed, gave hope to meant nothing to you now it is heart broken, dead and mangled the bird's loyalty meant nothing it served no purpose, other than your amusement.
