Pause (Free verse) by Nepanthe
'Sir do you have the time?'
'yes' he replied,
as his hand stopped in mind.
It ended when I became.
Like a bubble or an egg,
and the word 'silence' when said.
'It's 2:02, the area code to Washington D.C.' then
we looked down the street.
At the scraggly looking man scrounging for bottles in
the bins.
Then he said...
'I put a message in a bottle once,
only with time to carry it across'
then he shook his head.
'I know, I just found it on the curb'
'Could you read it once again?'
'Sir, do you have the time?'

Have you ever looked in the eyes of our elderly? It is amazing what you can see. Perhaps we all should pause...and say "Hello in there" (a quote from John Prine's song called, "Hello in There")
Great poem... :) Bethy
