It Ain't Christmas (Sestina) by D. $ Fontera
Billy went down to Arizona and got right. He says it's nothing like being crazy. The pokers there poked him somethin' painful, But he says time goes quicker in a white room. Billy gave us his smile and fearful eyes And we just stared until he cried again. He knows there ain't nothing like home again. Billy drew stars on the ceiling of his room. An educated man might think us crazy, When we asked our pal how we might get right. He said that needle is long and often painful, And we knew he meant it from his honest eyes. The river in Billy's garden turns our eyes Because it burns like sulpher so painful. If we want to get help than we need to go crazy, And Billy says it ain't like Christmas time again. We need to jump in that river and make room For all the things to leave which make us right. So we did all this and we let go what was right, And the pokers came up from Arizona with dark eyes. They told us Billy needed to come back to his room, But we said that we liked it more being crazy. That he was feeling like Christmas again. So they hauled us aways instead and it was painful. Billy just stared and we cried somethin' painful. He watched us go away down to Arizona to get right, But he wouldn't look into our fearful eyes. So he went back to his lonely starry room, And decided he would lose his mind again. Billy danced and fell into the river crazy. While the pokers drove back we went less crazy. They chased Billy around in circles painful, And we escaped from 'neath their watchful eyes. So they set Billy down with those needles again, And told us that he needed Arizona to get right. We waved bye to him and headed to his room. Looking at all the stars painted in his room, It seems that Billy wasn't ever really right. He never felt like Christmas time again.
