Bagni di Lucca (Other) by Sasha
Translated from the Italian of Eugenio Montale Between the thud of chestnuts And the hum of tempestuous weather That heaves their sounds together, This heart hesitates. Precocious winter’s northern wind Sets all in a shiver. My eyes Peer over the ledge that lets The day dissolve into ice. Marble, branches-- at a touch the leaves like arrows launch to the ditch with a twist. The final herd heads past, their breath a part of the rising mist.
