Oy comes from Jews, like the interjection 'Oy, vey!' signifying surprise, frustration, or 'Look, here's my reuben!' It has become pretty ecumenical in America because Jews are extraordinarily influential in almost every aspect of American life.

My mention of gypsies and homos was more-or-less incidental - though the 5 million non-Jewish suspected gypsies and homos interred in concentration camps during the Holocaust probably wasn't very incidental to the Nazis, gypsies, or homos.
