I returned to her
that crawling energy lingering in my stomach
six hours and three hundred miles
since saying goodbye to my co-conspirator,
I waited for her eyes to recognize my sins,
but they remained sleepily affectionate,
she failed to be alert enough to even ask.
I waited for her to get into 5th gear
then held her hand, her fingers locked with mine,
still high from the remembrance
of my joyfully sloppy sins,
I considered her through drunken thoughts,
feeling the layers of handskin between us
disintegrate until my heart pumped blood through us both.
Sure that my humors betrayed me,
carrying my physical memories into her thin frame,
sheâd comprehend my recent indulgences, uncensored,
and look over suddenly,
with a knowing but shocked expression,
Iâd return her pained look with a guilty grin.
After much anticipation and speculation,
we would realize:
This phase of life has ended.
