Replying to a comment on:
Dimestore Angel (Lyric) by Deborah Carter
I
By day she was an angel - wearin' angel wings,
By night she found heaven - doin' earthly things,
She was the talk of the tavern - the gossip on the street,
Mama fell out of grace - between some silken sheets.
Chorus .....
Just a dimestore angel - she kept fallin' down
Nighttime would find her - out runnin' round.
II
Now Mama was a poor girl - not quite twenty-three,
Who had five children - doin' what came naturally,
She worked down on the corner - at the local five and dime,
While daddy ran a stil - just cross the county line.
Chorus .....
Just a dimestore angel - she kept fallin' down
Nighttime would find her - out runnin' round.
Musical Break .....
Bridge .....
Now Mama didn't have a band of gold - but she had a satin dress,
And when the evenin' came along - she'd put it to the test,
Sheddin' her angel wings - to do what she did best,
She was in such demand - they wouldn't let her rest.
III
Now townsfolk got together - decidin' it wasnt right,
For kids to have a Mother - who was an angel of the night,
They called the county shelter - when mama was away,
And took us there - to spend our childhood days.
Chorus .....
Just a dimestore angel - she kept fallin' down
Nighttime would find her - out runnin' round.
IV
Some said it wasn't fittin' - when my mama passed away,
To dress her in that satin dress - for her judgement day,
But I knew she'd love the gossip - when laid to final rest,
Cause on her stone - I wrote these words -
Tag .....
"She did what she did best."
