Twenty-Some Years and Five Countries Away (Free verse) by drnick
It would seem as though an apology is in order, but for an apology there
must also be regret. Alas, there be none of that; you lifted my heart in
the same way a fossil is removed from its grave. Perhaps you fondled it
in an inappropriate way, but at least you put it back from where it came.
And so it lay waiting for another to come and mistake it for rare
treasure. Your fingerprints still remain however forgotten they may be.
It would seem as though a goodbye is in order, but for a goodbye you
must be present. Alas, there be none of that; you came and left like the
winds change-and with less evidence. The cozy summer's breeze is soon
forgotten to the painful winter's gust. So here's to the thought of
knowing you again, Twenty-some years and five countries away. Here's to
the thought that you wonât be so beautiful and cold as you are today.
