Asylum (Free verse) by TLRufener

The chains are rattling Because we want out The bars are banging Because we long for freedom Is there anyone out there Who can help us escape? We scream and cry As the jangle of keys Echo against the walls The ungiving stones Strong holding us in Our cries grow louder As the keeper approaches to visit A door squeaks open to reveal A terrified prisoner shaking in his cell Loud crashes echo Shouts and screams in the halls Each cell-door creaks open To free us from the cold Like frightened children we scatter Through the maze of rooms Free-for-all to save our lives As the halls begin to fill with smoke Fire blazes all around Blocking our nearest escape Pulled from the heat And drug to safety by a friend A smile comes to my face Sitting in the damp grass Watching the frightful scene The patients have taken back the asylum And I hold the keys.

It has a Langston Hughes/Mia Angelo quality to it.

Drug is a medication or narcotic. You mean dragged. Although drugged would make it the most interesting line in the poem.
