Dreams of Neverland: A Second Encounter (Free verse) by TLRufener
Each night I read another story,
Finishing them all one by one,
Always on the seat at my open window,
Hoping he would come.
One special snowy frosted night
As I tried to keep myself from drifting to sleep,
There came a strange yet familiar sound
Carried to me by the ever-frozen breeze.
A soft and gentle laugh floated
Down from above my pane;
A slight jingle in the breeze
I could have sworn was summer rain.
As I turned to blow the flame
From my candle burning bright,
A cautious and uncertain silhouette
Caught my girlish sight.
I gasped in surprise as I gazed
Upon his youthful face.
A quick smile of hello,
And he vanished without a single trace.
Before I knew what I was doing
I knelt before the snow,
And as I looked out upon the stars,
The second on the right glowed.
I blew out the flame from my candle
And sat down in my rocking chair.
I began to tell a special story
Knowing he was still there.
While my eyes slowly closed for sleep
And my thoughts slipped to Dreamland,
The flower blossom he left in the snow
Dropped down from my hand.
The snow over the sleeping city
Slowly began to drift
As he smiled at me through my window
After giving me his kiss.
