Dreams of Neverland: The First Encounter (Free verse) by TLRufener

One night as I sat reading, Near the glowing candle light, I heard a soft noise at my window As if someone was waiting outside. I set my book down carefully And walked to my bedroom window. The sky was clear and the city was white. On the ledge there were handprints in the snow. I opened up my window To see if anyone was there. I thought I was going crazy Until I saw the shadow of their hair. I sat down on my window-seat As the wind kissed the trees. I picked up a book and I could hear A heartbeat on the breeze. I slowly opened the cover And turned pages in the frosty air, And I began to read the pages aloud, Knowing someone was still there. Page by page the story unfolded, Laid out choice by choice. Every so often I could hear The laughter of a boy’s voice. As the story ended happily I could hear that same boy’s saddened sigh, And he slowly flew towards the stars As I sleepily closed my tired eyes.

A fine bedtime image of childhood.
